Hello All - Life has gone from zero to 60 every since our little baby boy, Tucker Louis, was born on Friday May 17th at 5:26pm.
Here's Tucker's Birth Story:
On Thursday, May 16th, I went in for my regular weekly doctor's appointment. The week before, my doctor told me that she did not think I would make it through the weekend, but lo and behold I did. Neither my doctor nor I could believe that the baby had not come yet. I was having a lot of pelvic pressure at the previous appointment, but oddly so, at my next appointment (May 16th) I was feeling really good...no hip pain, no pelvic pressure, and I could actually walk without waddling too much.
At the appointment, we first received another ultrasound just to check baby's placement and he was still head down and was measuring perfect. His weight was measuring about 7.5lbs. His weight totally shocked me. How could I have such a BIG baby in there. I always thought that he would be around 6lbs since hubby was a small baby (like 5lbs) and I weighed 7.7lbs when I was born.
Next, my doctor did an internal/cervical exam, and my cervix was about 5cm dilated and 80% effaced. In layman's terms, I was 5 cm wide/open and 80% thinned out.
So, my doctor asked if there were any questions towards the end of the appointment. Hubby and I asked a couple of questions. I then mentioned if I needed to walk more or have sex more (hee, hee) to get this baby here. My doctor said both could help. She then asked if we had thought about inducing. We stated that we (hubby and I) were just talking about induction (if we went past my due date). Doctor stated if we were interested in it we could do it because my cervix was definitely ready. Hubby asked when was the earliest that you can do it/have available. My doctor states, well I have availability tomorrow. I was basically 39 weeks, so about 1 week from my original due date.
SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! I was floored. I said hold up, let me wrap my head around this. You're saying I can have this baby tomorrow. I look at hubby and he's like let's do it. My doctor, looking at me, is like so do you want to do it. I finally said okay. It was so scary yet exciting. I was really going to have a baby....TOMORROW....as in the next day!!
So, we get the paperwork to report to the hospital the next day...Hubby later shared with me that he was concerned about waiting any longer and was interested in doing the induction because he feared a knot being in the umbilical cord (since baby's head was always close to the placenta). He also asked me if I wanted to wait a week and have a 8lb baby or have 7.5 baby now....ummmm, that definitely sold me :-) So we went to a nice dinner (since I couldn't eat anymore at midnight) we had a nice time enjoying our life before we became a family of 3.
I went in at 530am. I had a HUGE corner suite with and amazing view of west Houston. It was like the celebrity suite or something. They started the Iv at 630. I had two nurses. One was experienced and she was basically training the other girl that had been there 5 months. The inexperienced girl tried twice with I.V. and couldn't do it. That really sucked and where she stuck me hurt for days then after. The other nurse came in and did the I.V. with one try. Thank you LORD!! I was 4 almost 5 cm when I went in. Pitocin (to jump start my contractions) was started at 715am. It wasn't bad at all. Contractions were like period like cramps. Doc came and broke my Water around 830am. now that hurt! NOTE; about your water breaking....the water keeps coming/gushing and coming and coming.
Contractions started coming closer together about 2 min. But still were not bad. I knew I wanted an epidural from the beginning. Hubby told me to not try and be superwoman. So I got the epi about 940am. Epi was pretty much a breeze. I didn't see the needle at all. My contractions were not bad so when they stuck me in my back I could handle it. This made me glad that I didn't wait too long to get the epidural because I could not imagine bending over to get a shot in the back when contractions are SUPER intense. The nurse told me later that doctor said that I was her FAVORITE patient...awwwww how sweet. Everyone said that we were so low maintenance. So, I guess this is why my doc also liked us, plus my pregnancy was such a breeze.
From then, on I didn't feel much. My dilation was coming slowly. The nurses would say I was say 6cm yet doc would say I was a 7cm. I started feeling more pressure in the rectal region, and I could sense that I was having a contraction from this rectal pressure. Hubby viewed the monitor and confirmed when I was having contractions or would tell me that there is a big contraction coming and he would hold my hand through it. Finally at 5pm doc said I was ready. The nurses did a shift change at this moment and I got another nurse who was really good. My bed was like a robot bed how it broke down and leg lifts popped up. It was amazing how everything and everyone got in place for the big arrival. I began pushing around 5:10 or so. One of the nurses would count to 10 as I held my thighs and pushed. I didn't feel much while pushing just pressure and my doctor's hand stretching me (ahem) out to make way for the head and Tucker Louis arrived at 5:26. Hubby cut the cord which he said was REALLY thick and he had small scissors lol.
Tucker came out SCREAMING. This was the most amazing sound to hear.
Later, I asked the nurse what was Tucker's APGAR score (they score each baby from 1 to 10, based on appearance, reflex, color, etc). She said Tucker scored a 9 out of 10. The decrease was due to his color. I am assuming he was not as Pink (dark) as he should have been. They say rarely do babies score 10 out of 10.
Tucker was 7.1 lbs and 20.25 inches long.
We are SOOOOOO in love with our baby boy! PICS below. (CLICK TO ENLARGE THEM)
Hubby laughs at this pic and says I look like I just won an award. I said back in response "I would like to thank the academy"
I am STILL in awe at what our BODIES can do as women. I can't believe that this perfect little person was inside of me. I can't believe Jerry and I basically made this baby from SCRATCH lol. I felt like a SUPERWOMAN!!! I am excited to see him grow up.
I can't believe that I am saying this, but I look forward to some day having another baby
My mom, sis, niece arrived the date that we were discharged. I spent two nights in the hospital. You can kind see my view in the background. I would definitely recommend my hospital to ANYONE.
Please mark May 17, 2013 as the birth date of one of our FUTURE Presidents of the USA....Tucker Louis Thompson for President :-)
Although, I use to envision going into labor on my own and rushing to the hospital in the middle of the night with the contractions, the way our delivery happened was perfect and was much like me and Hubby...laid back and easy.....
